I’ve spoken about and praised extensively this classic album while reviewing the Razorback reissue in 2000. But since this album is so damn good and since it seems no picture of this original cover exists on the Internet, here is this new post… I know I should post more new albums and demos, but recently I am not in a mood of listening new records. There is so much good stuff left to be discovered in the past that sometimes I wonder why I just don’t set a date limit and just go back and try to patch the holes in my collection up to that point. Same thing goes for the webzine. Oh whatever. The two brothers that make Catasexual Urge Motivation (what happened to Vampiric Motives BTW?) debutted with this amazing full length album on this Heilbronn, Germany sick label Deliria productions (which also released some other stuff by Gut, Belching Beet etc. I bought quite some stuff from them!). Even if the Razoback’s edition is very simple in layout, this booklet is a real killer, ah ah… NOT! Half a page is taken by an ad of this guy’s graphic “studio” and well, it’s fun because the layout sucks hugely!! The fonts used are horrendous, the background so dark it makes the text difficult to read, and the whole work seems to be hurried in 10 minutes. There are no lyrics in this version as well, so you can sleep well if you don’t have this. The musical content seem to be otherwise identical to the reissue, immensely heavy, saturated, deep… it’s like hearing Death Metal from within the entrails of a giant, was this album recordered during a biopsy? The walls trasudate coagulated blood and slime as you hear this album, this is sickness come alive fuck! The eeriness is paralled only by the sheer heaviness of the sound, you can forgive the drum machine becouse the shit is so damn heavy, it’s really as good and as dense as Disembowelment and that’s saying something! Sludgy no the point of almost stopping, with furious release of blasting serial killer obsession. Whispers alternate with pig-like squeals… it’s a vortex of insanity! All of the lyrics here deal with murder, killings, slayings, torturing and raping! This was originally meant a 16 song album but they recorded 6 extra tracks for uner the label request to fill at least 60 minutes of music. Thanks Frank for this. A second album was to follow in 1997 called “What What Thou Wilt Shall be the Whole of the Law”. As far as I know, it was never released (or might have ended in the split with Neuropathia as Vampiric Motives, no clue).

    1 - Borivoj's Demise 2 - Incinerated 3 - Swamped in Gore 4 - Bag of Parts 5 - Dismembered Carcass 6 - Devourer of Souls 7 - Awakened by Stench 8 - Gorehog 9 - Gobblin' the Guts 10 - Cannibal Crave 11 - Claustrophobic Agnostic Dead

Now this is a band which for one reason or another was widely known but also widely forgotten when listing classic albums. I am not sure why, but I always liked this band with a visceral passion. This debut album on Grind Core records might not be incredibly refined, but shows a straight in your face dose of gore infested Brutal Death Metal which predated a lot of the modern scene’s current sound. I am tempted to put some soundclips for listening but I remember this album was re-released on Metal Blade (and more recently for a third time as a combo with “Bowels”), so no luck today, I don’t want to be sued for such shit! They have complained for the sound of this album in the past, but well, for me it’s grandiose, and perfectly fitting this band’s sound. It has also been recorded with the same Akai Adam DR1200 of “Swamped” so what’s your problem? The drum in particular have a slightly echoing sound that might be taken as an ingenuity in engineering but I personally find the effect enthralling, it’s like drum beating from beyond the land of the living. I really dig the style of this drummer. He’s fast and powerful at the same time, and he has personality too. I always enjoyed saying that this album stands to “Eaten Back to Life” as “Swamped in Gore” stands to “Tomb of the Mutilated”. Well the comparisons holds but listening to this Cd after so many years, I admit that this “Swamped in Gore” is way heavier, and more brutal than “Eaten” for damn sure. It has several drawbacks however, and the worse is, there is a huge dose of tarantella riffs (shit, listen to the refrain of “Swamped in Gore” and “Incinerated”, they’re horrible, I can’t shrug the vision of Pulcinella dancing at the vocals of Joe Ptacek clapping hands!). If you manage to ignore those few terrible moments, this debut offers moments of sublime gore rapture. The drumming is forceful, the guitar riffs chunky and full of brutal breakdowns, the vocals of Joe still unripe but already deep and guttural (hey he was still clean shaven here)… The lyrics here all deal in a way or another with death, rotting corpses and zombies. This is the essence of gore itself isn’t it? NMow Now Clem Cow Griffin and company have a real gift for writing gore lyrics, even if in this album they were a bit unimaginative, their use of English was fluid and enternatining. It is a intro of things to come, but I enjoyed reading them all again. “Uuuh gore hog brings death, hammocks from hell!”. I won’t reccomend this album since the following one just destroys everything, but I would reccomend buying all four albums of this band, they’re real pioneers of the genre, this was 1991!

    1 - Hobo Stew 2 - Embryonic Triclops 3 - Decimated Genitalia

“Hobo Stew” is a single which was released a bit before “The Bowels of Repugnance”, marked from a cover artwork drawn by the hands of the same beloved Rob Smits who also did the full. What’s within the envelope? A sickly green trasnparent vinyl, but without neither inner sleeve nor a lyric sheet. Is it my copy only or was it released this way? I have other 7″s by Metal Blade (suck as Cannibal Corpse and Epidemic) and indeed neither have anything but the record so… the songs in here are just a selection picked from the album: “Hobo Stew”, “Embryonic Triclops” (this time without the “-” symbol), “Decimated Genitalia”… nothing much more to add. I love the bile green concept a la Re-Animator but these songs are not even a rough mix of the ones in the album, they’re the exact same! These songs are obviously amazing, with “Hobo Stew” delivering an immensely dense almost doomy passage, but this is an object to buy only for quenching a collector lust. Well, let’s say you get to see Joe Ptacek’s face here. Happy?

Two years have passed since “Swamped in Gore”. Joe has grown a goatee and the band got a contract with Metal Blade in the meantime. And who knows what happened in his rotting brain but Brian Griffin’s talent has developed so much as to compose incredibly sick songs. This album to me is a fucking monument to gore!! No shit, this one stands close to “Tomb of the Mutilated” as one of the sickest, most disgusting gore drenched albums of all time. I remember it was somewhat hard to distinguish the vocal lines (well today’s normal to skip them becouse they’re unintelligible but this was released in a different time and age). The drummer has become a fucking war machine as well, damn how I like his style. Perfect sound too, full but sharp. He’s clockwork precise but is also able to beat the fuck out of the snare drums in machine gun hyperblasts nearly as fast as Mick Harris’, and here’s no blurry grindcore goin’ on beneath, but sick downtuned Death Metal with a huge dose of slam, chuggish power riffs and outstanding vocals that are the essence of the zombie rot made sound. Despite a lot of modern granitic but somewhat sterile bands, the sickness in this album is palpable. I can hear the flies and scavenger insects of rot buzzing in the studio, I can feel the drops of blood falling from the rusty hooks down into the grime, on the floor cluttered by jellified viscera entrails and chopped up abortions. And the vocals, they’re a constant roar coming from the deep of the stomach! Everything is perfect to me here. The sound is not too polished and that fits the sanguinary madness, they’re operating with rusty knives, not sterile bisturis dammit! Griffin has somehow also developed an amazing skill at composing melodic intermezzos. Not IN the song of course!! The songs are devoid of mellow chords, only grievious sounds of butchery here! I mean instrumental songs, tehy’re delicious. James Murphy also appears here with some solo shit of his, well, not really needed but always welcome. The lyrics too are horribly nasty, not just about rot but also torture, perversions, asphyxiation, skinning, diseases… all matters that define the Death Metal genres. If you think Death metal is about philosphy and cannabis, well, my answer resides in this booklet. Read: fuck off. Give me beer and gore, that’s my interpretation of metal, cunts. My favorite lyrics are those of “Hobo Stew”: “Fetus Eater, no meat is sweeter”!!! The artwork too is deign of note. I am not sure, but I am almost certain this is the same artrist who also did cover for an Avulsed demo and something by Mass Psychosis. I made some research and nothing came out, but it’s possible this guy was the drummer for the mediocre electronic band Kong (Rob Smits). If you got more infos mail me!

em>Broken Hope is still here in 1995, and Joe Ptacek’s beard has exploded one foot in every direction. The most entertaining thing about this album is possibly these insane lyrics. They’re really fucking deviated. We got 7th month abortions, porn psychosis, deformed fetuses, freaks, sex changes, death by hybernation you fucking name it. I read these lyrics again and again, Jeremy Wagner is really a master in writing real death metal texts: “Tell me, mother, can you feel the child kick?” (just before the abortion, ahah!), this guy’s insane. Musically I can’t say I love this album as much as “Bowels” becouse things have become a bit too refined, but here we have solid granitic Death Metal, each riff a slab of concrete, each drum kick a boulder, and the recording’s neat without sounding too artificial. There are several solos here, other than a crystalline production so I am pretty sure lovers of ordered Death Metal are going to enjoy this even more than the first two albums. The textures have dilated enormously since the previous albums, condensing in an endless concatenation of chugs. Every song seems made only of staccatos, or vaguely Massacre-ish punch, but luckily some grinding accelerations balance the game. My fave song must be this “Pitbull Grin” with their dog Zaya doing the chorus ah! This album also ends with a fucking wonderful cover of that gay band Twisted Sisters “Captain Howdy” (maximum respect to Dee Snider as a person, but his band always sucked) which sound just killer. This must be amazing to hear in a venue just after a show. The cover art? Benscoter ladies…

It is really weird to hear that the recording of this Modus Delicty (ex-Nobody) is so below the recording standards of this 3 way. The sound sounds almost garageish, not only heavier on basses but also way rougher… and hell yes now I understand why, this is a live concert, fuck! You hear clapping at the end of the tracks ah! Here we have another example of solid Brutal Death inectricably linked to the American scene, and I’ll dare to say, the Southern American scene… The vocals are in the vein of Devourment, ranging from growls to the ree ree grating we all so much love, and so does the drumming remind me a bit of that band from Tx. The instrument however create a sort of ordered chaotic maelstrom of complex breaks, hacked even more into fragments by a protagonist Cryptopsy like bass picking, the thick metallic strings are very prominent here, but while they tend to tear apart the songs into countless small phrases, they also help giving the whole thing a pace since the guitars tend to be a bit fuzzy in the mix, huge brutal death distortion and live recording don’t always get along well. So while the music is fast, you don’t get the idea of one single flowing riff, but you hear it fluctuate constantly along scales wuthout a shred of melody.
