Generally speaking, I adore minimalistic, crude, South American Black Metal, I also like when the sound seems to fade and raise due to old-school vintage recording methods. And hey, there are also a lot of great slow riffs a la Necro Schizma in here as well. Then why I can’t convince myself to appreciate this Ep? Well, for a start these vocals are atrocious, more like a shocking gasp than an evil roar. This guy must have left some sensible body parts in the middle of shutting a door or something like that, in any case these are not the kind of Black Metal vocals I like, dammit. Get “Salvation” by Funeral Mist and hear what I mean for real satanic singing! Other than that, the drums are stiff but manage to pound sometimes with that nice primitive force of early Sarcofago… but most of the time they’re just plain sloppy. Same thing for the riffs, I feel a strong sense of deja vu, as if I was still listening to that multitude of greek black metal bands that sprang from the footprints of Necromatia, Varathron etc. in the mid nineties, mostly on Molon Lave (sigh). There is a vague sense of melody in the background, which paired with these horrendous vocals, create a screeching aura which I find boring as hell. The layout is totally black metal: simple but with a sober elegance. It has to be noted that this Ep is a tribute to the drummer of the band, who died somewhere in 2006. This Ep is limited to 500 copies.

It is always great to hear Klysma releasing sick quality gore splatter grind noize shit for our sickheads! This split Cd contains projects by two of the most prolific minds in the Dutch goregrind scene that is Rogier and Marc, and well, it’s a fucking challenge to swallow it in a single breath, it’s fucking heavy! The Carnival of Carnage side has a neat, sharp cover which reminds a bit of some old horror comic or movie poster, plus that nasty dripping logo, good box for what’s rotting inside: 22 tracks of sewage goregrind monstrosity… quite far from Tumour or Facevomitatie indeed becouse this shit is somewhat more articulated and much slower, even if I wouldn’t call it “sludge”. The guitar distortion is heavy and choked with basses but they’re not over the top so that the music never crackles. The vocals are froglike, also heavily effected but not as watery as Tumour‘s, and the drum machine here has a surprisingly realistic feel. Songs are generally mid tempos, carpeted by super fast kick drums, but the things flow smoothly in mid range speeds. It has to be noted that this stuff was recorded in 2000 and mastered one year later, so this is over five years old now! The recording however is so clean it’s even better than the 3 way split on Imphalte (with Disgorged Foetus and Vivisection), it just has the right balance between bass saturation and splattery chords. With almost 40 minutes of stuff, this is a heavy intro to the noise massacre that follows with Biocyst!

Biocyst‘s sound is so filthy and degraded that it makes Carnival of Carnage sound like Dream Theater. Ah ah. Well not really to be honest, but it’s just to say that we’re way more into the noisecore land more than straight gore-grind. The closest connection I could do is Anal Birth, and maybe some harsh noise shit a la Hypo Christians, End of Silence, Pile of Eggs… The sound as said before is low to the point of nonsense, crackling constantly with oversaturation. It is diffuclt to distinguish the chords becouse everything is so indistinct. However the vocals have that elephantine frequency, combined with some indistinct frog like croaks. There is probably something going on beneath the chaos for what concerns the drums, but it’s hard to hear anyuthing else but some grinding “thuds” of the snare blasting when things get faster. After the first few minutes, the tracks become shorter and shorter, up to just a few seconds long. I love it when you get this long intro and then 2 seconds of burps and senseless noize. When the Biocyst corpse grinding machine starts mincing, all you hear is basically a rolling wave of bass frequencies and distortions, with liquid, bestial sounds which could be connected to “vocals” with some skill in the genre (eh). It will be my favourite in the stereo for the next few days, for fucking sure!!

One thing I feel like complaining is, labels goddammit hire a fucking professional when doing graphics for an album!! The song lists in this Cd are so fuzzy it’s impossible to understand what’s written. The characters look like blurry dots! And when downloading gore from the Internet, consider that images have to be a resolution of at least 300 dpi before sending them to the printer while those are way less. Never downsample pictures, try bringing them to the right resolution before using them on your graphics. Or the effect would be so fucking lame, like this cover… it’s a pity becouse the images chosen were nice…

You know, I am always totally supportive of extreme, nonsense, ridicously distorted goregrind even if it is just a bedroom project: there is just something so refreshing in this genre. However something is lagging a bit when it comes to extremity and sickness in this Oral Mutilation project. The riffs are so elementary they’re almost ludicrous, but that’s not an absolutely bad thing: it’s the production which sounds just too clean, the vocals too distinct and the drum in a middle ground that’s neither sludge nor blasting. I am afraid I have to tell that this Cd-r might be an interesting start but it’s probably not disgusting enough to be called mature gore grind, this sounds more like second rate death metal with some harmonizer attached at the mic. Sounds a bit like early Atavsim at 1/10th speed. Of course this is just a four tracks demo (yes it is called promo but you know, promos are sent by the LABELS, demos are sent by the BANDS, in general… and there’s no label behind this I am pretty sure eh eh). Even if I am able to grind basically everything from harsh noise to the most extremest of the extreme, I somewhat step back when I meet something which is not as sick as it’s supposed to be. And I was expecting something more lo-fi and sewage from Oral Mutilaton. My Cd crackles in at least 3 points but this is due to the mic not being able to withstand the basses and well, since it’s not a continuative effect (like in Anal Birth, Abosranie Bogom or Canker) it just sounds a bit like a lame oversight. No seriously, there is a lot of work to do here. But keep trying scumbag!!!

I admit I was expecting some horrible floppy death metal a la Warlord UK or Benediction post-“Grind Bastards” when I read about this Downlord, the name of Dave Ingram made me shudder, even if his last work with Bolt Thrower was well fitting the band’s nostalgic war story atmospehre. Well once again I was wrong, the band is not so bad. And what’s good is that Dave abandoned the atrocious barking he used in his latest Benediction days for more characteristic powerful vocals like the one he was able to produce for the masterpiece “Transcend the Rubicon”. Even though I am sure there are way better demos awaiting to be repressed around, Open Grave’s choice to bundle the two demos of this band into a single Ep is nice, I never heard the band before except for a few rumors, so it was good to hear how they sounded like. This is just limited to 666 copies so if you’re interested into hearing it you better hurry up. The number 666 might sound a clichè but it seems the band even got the “blessing” from the Church of Satan to use LaVey texts for their new album “Random Dictionary of the Damned”, hence probably something a bit deeper is going on between the lines. How’s this this Downlord like then? Well for a start much better than the latest Benediction for sure, hell it’s not too difficult a task!!! Ah ah. No seriously, this is a kind of pure Death Metal with neat production, heavy riffs, and a bunch of weird guitar evolutions, which cannot be compared directly to anything else. It sounds very modern but at the same time not impossibly brutal like this new breed of Unique Leader bands. The riffs are well distinct and mostly made of heavy, chugging palm muting chops, but they’re not a groove only band, since there are a few accelerations which are not present in shit bands like Six Feet Under, thanks god. For once, the songs on the most recent demo sound better than the earlier ones. I can’t say I am a big fan of this band becouse there is not really an abundance of brutality or sick feeling which is fundamental in Death Metal in my opinion, but this is not to throw away either. This might be the most mature and complete release by this label so far, even though the rating I give it might now reflect it. This is becouse more advanced doesn’t always mean better, at least here at the Nuclear Abominations headquarters. Riminscences of Massacre abound here, as well as a handful of competent guitar soloing. Compact Death Metal arranged with the skill of a veteran, this would probably appear simpler palates.

Hm no. We haven’t got anything deign of note in here this time. When I first read the words black metal on the promo sheet I was already picturing horrible shireking screams and fuzzy guitars but in the beginning of the album this band plays instead a somewhat different breed of Black Metal. It is more traditional metal riffs with lots of reverb and agonizing vocals, which at first sounded interesting enough, with some riminiscences of early Celtic Frost etc. Let’s say, it sounded a bit like Black Metal from the eighties. Sadly, things degrade rapidly after a handful of minutes and by song number three the first experiments appear: late Emperor keyboards start spoiling the grim atmosphere with bombastic “cold” melodies. By song number four, the second generation Black Metal sound is here in all its insignificance, with all its clichès of faintly melodic scales and indistinct witchlike vocals. Exactly how all these things are supposed to work together I am not sure, but I can tell you this song “The Journey to the Forest” is horrenous, droning, banal to the point of vomiting derivative black metal with no ideas nor feel. Just background noise shit. By song five you get back to some thrash roots and a bunch of gothic metal dance steps.Things are a bit confusing here, it sounds just like a patchwork of different styles arranged casually on the disc. And the cover art is an agony to look at as well: moon and forest et al. Save for some decent vaguely Hellhammer riminiscent riffs in the beginning, the rest of the album could be discarded easily as “useless”.

    1 - Murderer 2 - Who Must Die 3 - Living a Lie 4 - No Further Existence

This is Beyond Terror Beyond Grace‘s debut, a young band from Australia’s Blue Mountains, and it consist of four short tracks of a non-defined mix of extreme music styles. The opening riff is a total killer hyperfast blast of violence strongly influenced by Rotten Sound, Jigsore Terror, To Separate The Flesh From The Bones and the likes and made me hope for the best… if things were following that line all the time we could have had something real interesting if not overly complex or catchy. However there is a big flaw that I spotted almost immediately, and it’s that these songs are made up of riffs so eterogeneous that it feels like hearing Praxis or Mr Bungle (well not exactly to be honest but you get the point). While that opening blast was full of energy, the mid tempo Death Metal slam that follows close is among the most boring I have ever heard, kind of Internal Bleeding stripped down to play even more basic sloppy death. The vocals are a schizoid chamaleon which vary completely timbre from grunt to screams according to the underlying riff, and something weird happened when those got higher: a cold, pine smelling breeze entered my room and I could hear the penguins approaching from beyond the mist… Ah! No really they sound more new black metal than Grind, but that’s just a matter of perspective, I guess I could get used to them if we get over the bigger flaws. To tell the truth, I hate the Death Metal slam mid tempos in here, but the faster riffs range really from average to excellent. They should really drop the useless parts where the vocals become guttural and keep the faster parts only, or just try to improve songwriting of the slower bridges, becouse those are real lame. As it is, this is neither fish nor meat as they say here. The Cd has a very short duration, just like 9 minutes or so, but I guess it explores clearly what the intent of this band is. The guys look very young so we can expect some serious improvement I think. I hope the singer is just growing his hair, and not keeping that cut on purpose, though (ah ah, j/k). Nothing much to add to this, working a good layout when flames are involved is real though and well, it doesnt work in here either, but this is an Ep so things might have been made with some hurry. The cover depicts a man or a scarecrow shrouded in flames, and little else. At least the quality of the pics is sharp.
