On a purely dedicational level, I hardly believe there is a group of people in Italy as dedicated to the American Brutal Death scene as the guys that play in Vomit the Soul, so much obsessed with Death Metal version 2.0 to the point of forming a stunning quality label for everything dealing with teh genre called Permeated. These guys had things clear in mind since the beginning, and it showed a bit in this earlier demo work, though there are really a few elements here that will survive the evolution of the band to this day. The reference to Cannibal Corpse start and end with the name of the notorious song with Glen Benton on backing vocals as there is really nothing else of that band in these tracks. Heavy riffs a la Massacre are the main dish in this supper, but some timid leaks a la Internal Bleeding/Dying Fetus also appear at times. The vocals are steadily deep and I thank Max for not adding the high screams that seem to be so cool nowadays. I am not overly enthusiastic over the final result however, as it lacks energy to maintain alive the interest all the time and also lacks of the all-crushing slam energy which seems to be the main goal here, the problem is simple to exploit from my point of view: for a slow riff to crush the fuck out of everything, one has to build up the atmosphere step by step and release it into a shoveling chug once the pressure is high enough. If you keep on chugging all the time, things get quite monotonous quickly. There is no real wave curve to analyze, just a flat line. This is my two cents on the argument however, as this is not exaclt my style. Thnks will improve with time anyway, as I’ll explain in the next review.

Let’s cover my point on these vocals frist: they’re horrendous. Why exactly nobody seemed to recognize how weak and stupid they sound like? As a chorus for Macabre, they could have been nice, but neither of the singers seems to be convincing to any degree, the high ones are just naughty, and the low ones just sound like a cough from someone who smokes 5 packs of cigs a day. Other than that, save one terrible tarantella in “Drama Queen” the rest of the music is killer shit, complex and powerful grindcore structures with neat sound, sing along choruses, and even a couple of guitar tricks that shows how these guys could handle their love sticks with proficiency. There is some of the savagery of Ludichrist in this stuff, with their twisted sense of irony as well. The lyrics too drip of rigthful sarcasm, but sometimes we fall into squat/high school-quality critics against machism and society which just annoy me (exactly how much these guy can KNOW about the politics in the US, and exactly how much they know about Black Metal save the pictures they saw on Kerrang?). Taken on the song structuires alone, this is quite powerful, but I really cannot get over the disastrous vocals.

There is really no need to go into graphic details here, becouse this is the swansong of THE goregrind band par excellence, along with early Carcass, early Regurgitate and earlier Dead Infection. A massacre without a fucking second of breathing space, no intros, no pause, no slow downs whatsoever. The layout is superb, as is the grisly layout arranged with stomach curling details of real life gore, from decapitated heads from central Africa to the cadaver stabbed to death on the front cover. I doubt this band did it for shock value only, as this is the kind of gore which isn’t fun to watch, as it comes from things that happen in everyday life. But hell, the music is a lot of fun to hear instead, fuck! Published posthumous, this last opus by our beloved is a limitless carnage, all blastbeats and harmonized vocals, with a hammering drumwork that beats non-stop from start to end. It’s invigorating stuff that needs to be pumped up at full volume in the car stereo if you know what I mean. It is ironic that the last track is titled “A Divine Proclamation of Finishing the Present Existence” since it’s probably the last stuff we hear from this band, and it’s a hell of a track, a real killer. To make things clearer, none of the other songs save this last one clocks to the full minute, lots of these just stay a few seconds long. Many thanks to a band that never slowed down in over ten years of tenacity! To be noticed that Erwin doesn’t sing in this album, but considering the heavy effects the change isn’t particularly painful. Men this shit is really an exaggeration in heaviness!!!

Prague is an enchanting place, grey, cold, sober and full of monumental beauty. And among the pleasant things you could find there, there is also a band which races for the most idiot name I have heard in a long time. Prejudices apart, Poppy Seed Grinder play intense, relatively technical Brutal Death that doesn’t differ much from the kind offered by earlier Dying Fetus (“Infatuation” era), with its huge shares of harmonic twists and leaks, and ogre-deep vocals. I am listening to this Cd with a pair of very old headphones so I can’t tell you anything about the recording with accuracy, but the things seems to be arranged for the best here, with crisp production, dozen tempo changes, over the top synchronous chug/grunt moments and all that classic Dying Fetus weaponry, plus some extra inch of fast blasting. Not groundbreaking but good stuff if one loves this kind of Death Metal, however it is diametrically opposite to the Death Metal I DO like, and that leaves me a bit cold in the end. Excellent top level packaging here, on the level of the rest of Khaaranus releases. To make it clear, don’t be misled by the name, there is no grind here.

Needful Thing‘s debut full-length is a darn impressive juggernaut of annihilating grindcore, spewed up from the concrete slums of Perdovice, as fast and as hard as the city’s famed horse racing contest. The pictures of destruction that can be found within the booklet are fitting the music quite well, fast almost all the time, with a couple of bridges that however maintain a solid percussion uptempo (and shit, I love this drum sound, it emerges with the right “snap” noise among the chaos). The vocals are mainly mid-range growls but you get also a good share of classic higher screams when the drum starts bastbeating and the instruments cramp together into intense releases of pure energy. While pure grindcore is not my favourite genre, I would spend my two cents that this is among the best shit that you could produce in this field, as intense as more known names like Nasum or Cripple Bastards. Pounding hard and dripping shimmering energy this is possibly the best grindcore album I heard this year so far. As far as I can tell, this is also one of the few releases that the bassist of the band Otto didn’t actually produce with his own label Psychotherapy.

Please offend me now, and heavily. Was always Ribspreader THIS good? I definietly need to check out the former 2 albums becouse if they’re half as good as on this Cd, I have found another hit for the month. The initial riff of this sick album screams Carnage with twisted pride. Ribspreader plays pure 1990 Swedish Death Metal in the vein of Carnage (again), Bloodbath, Grave and other bands so good my hands tremble as I type the names. They are not as savagely heavy as Blooodbath, and some other contaminations make way into their sound, sometimes a bit too rock’n roll maybe, but the important thing is that the vocals are always sick, the distortion is still of the Dismember kind, and the lyrics remain sick and vulgar. Autopsy influences which were vital for the original Swedish sound could also be glimpsed, and sometimes the vocals too a bit raucuous and acid-vomit-burned, in the vein of old Chris (not that unique, though). The album doesn’t live up the same intensity from start to end, but stuff like this is molten gold today, with some added dirt and some less rhytmic tempos we might have REAL top level shit here. From what I heard these guys are even better than Death Breath, this new attempt at reviving Swedish Death like Bloodbath did excellently in the beginning, made by ex-Grave members after that disastrous shit that was Cahosbreed. Nice sick cover art too, insane and rough.

Well, I’ve never hidden the fact that I find classic Heavy Metal, be it prog or street or whatever variation on the theme, disgusting to the extreme. I just couldn’t swallow it in the ’80s and after 20 years I still don’t find any nostalgy for the sharp vocals and minutes-long solos, not to mention spandex and big hair. If anything, it was the kind of music I hated the most and it was the main deterrent that kept me from listening to Metal in my first days into uncommercial music (that’s why I was mostly into Hard Core at first). This might be a small jewel for the lovers of classic bands but to me it’s a boredom without limits. It’s not as bad as Fates Warning (man, that’s real shit), but we’re on that wave length, with terribly soporific guitars and single-note shrills. the fact the first song alone is 7 minutes long is a declaration of war for my gonads ah. That said, you still shall support the label becouse it’s a finest one, and this Cd is also numbered, they just dribble between amazing reissues of bands like Dream Death and Blood Feast and things like… this. The only good thing in ageing, is that I feel free to shoot shit on classic bands without being possibly be reprised of “not having lived in that period”. I just did (yeah I am a showoff), and always found this music vomiting, period. Not get out of my boots.
