Embrace of Thorns is way less noisy than Goathcrist but while this recording sounds much like a amateurish attempt at citing Von and other cult Black Metal bands in a rehearsal room, I admit some fairly evocative music is being waved here. The vocals are also quite clear, but are of the right kind, distorted and moving steadily from puking sound to nasty snarls. I am not a fan of musicianship, I really want to underline this every time, but I am afraid this is one of those cases when creating simple drone looping sounds just don’t work 100%. I appreciate the attempts but it sounds a bit too little suffocating and the final result is a bit like hearing a college band rehearsing. There is not just enough dark energy here to elevate the whole music above the average, even though the insiprations are all the right ones (Masacre, Goatpenis, Archgoat etc.). If this band find some more chemistry, we might have some real interesting stuff here, the right elements are all here.

Hey this is not bad at all, so there is still some Black Metal left in Norway? I was completely hopeless after years upon years of complete fuzzy shit. I wasn’t familiar with Goatchrist but this is actually a repress of their 2004 demo, a juicy chunk of bastardized Black Metal with roaring vocals and totally deprived recording sound, it really doesn’t sound much different than a chainsaw hitting a train being recorded with a walkman, but that’s the spirit I support, as far as there is satanic energy pumping in the background. The complete chaos is characterized by a vibraing, almost droning hammering and a interlocking of vomiting vocals, plus the added value of a guitar which aimlessly pummel random notes. This is possibly closer to a grindcore/noise band turned towards the bestial side, with dismembered angels, nuclear holocaust, spiked leather and all the good shit that can be found in real Black Metal. It’s very raw but I reccomend this shit nonetheless. Argh!

Generally speaking I always give bands from South America an extra inch of expectation and interest, especially when we talk about porn/grind/gore bands like this Holy Shit B.S.E. I firstly thought to be. I have to admit this time we have terribly routine Death Metal instead, not goregrind at all, and while the vocals are deep and beefy, the riffs are hopelessly mediocre, like those early Death Metal thrash/death demos I used to trade in the early 90’s. You got just easy chugs over and over and textures too open to be effective. The aesthetics of the band are based on sadism and pornography, although not excessively extreme, and the booklet is thick and slick to the point it feels as if wet with oil. There is not much to add, this is a band which should really revise completely their choice of riffs to make something interesting.

Baalphegor is a refreshing, energic Brutal Death Metal band from Catalonia, a province of northern Spain. The kind of music they propose is of the modern, technical kind, with deep powerful vocals and fast rhytms, with a good share of solos and breakdowns to make the whole experience varied and well defined. Textures and rhytms are clearly cut, more in the vein of modern German DM bands than ultra-brutal American 1000mph massacrers like Liturgy or Sikfuk: my bet is this Cd will appeal also lovers of older fashioned Death Metal and not just modern Brutal kinds with rap pants and gold necklaces a la Mr. T. Sometimes I like to hear bands where you can clearly identify each song from the very first 2 seconds, and Baalphegor belongs to this family, they are brutal but with personality, I would dare removing the B word and simply delcare this album as classic Death Metal with excellent production and stuff. My only problem is that I have been listening to Levifer, Nuclear Death and Hacawicz for the past few days and my mind is tuned towards much more chaotic and rawer stuff and hearing a band like this is like drinking milk if you know what I mean. I am not much into this music right now, as I am fully in my “filth period”, but I won’t be fair if I talked bad words about an above average work like this. The lyrics are all about sci-fi visions of worlds where alien species fight for survival, mind control chips are installed in newborn babies and so on, a bit riminiscent of Nocturnus if we want. Packaging is thick and glossy, the cover is a bit too “cheap CGI” for my tastes, but it works.

Am I fucking going blind or what? For days I waited before hearing this album becouse I saw a Black Metal guy in corpsepaint on the cover, while it was really just a child with black hair and tape on her mouth. Ah. I am going nuts. Anyway Denigrare is quite okay to me, they play some sort of Brutal Core/Death Metal mix with very little melody and Spanish vocals and a wonderful wood block snare drum sound a la old Pungent Stench. All the songs are made up of a multitude of jagged riffs and very inexpressive, hysterically brutal vocals a bit riminiscent of the very early Krisiun. The guitars aren’t excessively fast, but I bet this album has been quite wronged by its production quality, with some beefier sounds this could have been quite brutal. The abrasive, chunky sound reminds me a bit of that old band named Shredded Corpse if someone remembers, too, but really when the riffs alone aren’t able to hold up the music, recording quality becomes of main importance. Also the layout suffers from one big printing flaw, it seems the films moved when the ink was applied to the covers, becouse there is a blurry effect that makes most of the artwork and text difficult to read. For lovers of brutal, amelodic shit like Incestuous, Shredded Corpse, Cumchrist this shit might appeal a lot. The bonus tracks also show that the drummer is able to blast as well. I don’t understand Spanish but I bet the concept is about pedophilia or something like that.
