  • DR SHRINKER (USA/Wi): “Our Necropsy” split 7” Ep with NUNSLAUGHTER (USA/Pa) 2002 Revenge

This band is a fucking classic. It’s one of those names you saw disappearing gradually from fanzines even before the 90’s were knocking. It was real good to see a re-release of their works (this song should actually be a demo recording sponsored by Earache but which never saw the light of day). After three demos, in fact (“Recognition”, “Wedding the Grotesque”, “The Eponym”), the band disbanded. Being that an old band, one shouldn’t be surprised Dr. Shrinker are recording here some good, very good old school thrash/doom metal. Before you start skipping the review becouse you’re only into “brudal sduff”, hold in mind there could be nothing as vigorous and violent as good REAL thrash. Just hold in mind classics like ASPHYX, very first DEATH or the great Gods PESTILENCE, cut them half speed and add a bunch of more Deathy grunts and a more obscure “horror” sound to the mix to roughly figure out what this band sounds alike. Well, that isn’t as accurate but might do. Dr. Shrinker were fast and competent musicians able to recreate weird and magic apocalyptic atmospheres even among all this chaos of thrashy riffs and their atypical “female” vocals. Yes. Female. Dr. Shrinker reaches its best in the long doomy, spectral parts that set up an heavy “haunting” mood unlike any other band I know. Classic, classic.
  • TRAUMATISM (Can): “Traumatical Pieces” 7” Ep 1999 Spasmoparapsychotic

    1) Stupid Pedophili-ac 2) Juicy Cerebellum 3) Souffleuse Attack 4) Fuckops 5) Braincrusher 6) Human Race 7) Red Noize

First off this is a live 7”, but the sound that comes out is really outstaning, same quality or better than many other grind studio releases (well, not Relapse stuff maybe but you got the point). TRAUMATISM play some sort of fast Brutal Death with a score of grind/crust elements thrown in, grindcore bursts, low grunt boar vocals and a rather heavy overall sound. They blend quite interestingly elements of crust and hardcore/grind with those classical Death super-dense parts a la BRUTAL TRUTH. “Braincrusher” or “Red Noize” for example could easily be punk/hard core grind covers, yet there are too may elements which are typically metallic. it’s real good becouse they manage to blend powerful sounds with energic, loose arrange-ments.

    1) Where Girls Learn to Piss on Command 2) Tampon Removal 3) Barfoot and Hungry 4) Barbaric Teenage Orgasm Simulator 5) Cold Turkey (Ahumado Granujo” cover) 6) Zombie Squad 69 (Mucupurulent cover)

Here they are again, with another piss yellow vinyl and another display of super professional, neat and elegant design (their latest covers could be exposed in some darn high fashion shop so fine they are). The tracks in this 7” are a sample from the upcoming “Sadochismo” full length on Ablated, plus two covers from two goregrind bands by the name of Mucupurulent and Ahumado Granujo; I knew this last one from one compilation sampler, theyre quite fast but not so exceptional. CBT on the other hand maintain its characteristic sound that is never overly fast but still saturated with distortion, mostly adehering to GUT-like mid tempos, and with a coupla accelerations that in any case maintain a controlled, almost computerish speed. Vocals, well, they still remain highly in the “boiling pudding density” range, although might be my impression but they got quite modulated this time. I think we have little or no bands with this huge personality in the grindcore scene today.

I can foretell that somebody will call this band Doom because it’s slow. Nevertheless I think it’s even easier to identify: this is just slow Death Metal. The single riff that is used for the total length of this track is nothing too special, the vocals are good and very sharp but are the only good element that could stand out of this otherwise totally invisible Ep. Maybe they should switch singer with Nuclear Winter. Trying to go a bit more detailed about a single track is quite tricky. It’s just the same mid-slow paced martial riff pounding for minutes with this screechy thing rasping in your hi-fi. I wonder if it’s really worth recording one single song like this.

While I’m a bit upset by the fact their logo is so similar to mine (the fact it’s been drawn by the same guy and we have the same first-half in the name helps), I must admit NUCLEAR WINTER plays closest you can imagine to BOLTTHROWER without being a complete rip off (it’s not easy to clone them however, but this is the first band that even TRIES to do it that I can think of). When the music starts to get in the fullest swing, though, the riffs become more UNLEASHED-style, chubby and packed full of triplet rhythms with some more melodic strokes. The vocals, which were the weakest spot in their full-length, now have become quite ok, while not outstanding, but it should be noted that they tend to become a bit worse in the end of their side (was the singer a bit tired? uhmm). While still Death Metal in the broadest meaning of the term, I didn’t shoot from the hip when I heard it for the first, nor second, nor third time. Different enough, and passionate, but not dazzling.

I have been in Nuremberg this summer, and had the chance to taste the fabled Nurenbergers, kinda small, wiry wursts with small tasty seeds in their blend, very good. But it’s not about dead meat sausages you have to deal when talking about DEAD, but instead of live big, pierced, veiny vibrant cum-gushing sausages, like the one Godzilla is holding when spraying his love cream all over Manhattan’s skyscrapers. There is really nothing priceless in this single EP, but it’s damn fantastic to get a hold on it, particularly for collectors (after all, isn’t the vinyl market going towards it as time goes on?). Piss yellow wax in the best DEAD tradition, the 2 songs herein encased are taken one from the VIP album and the other live from ’93. I consumed my dictionary with praises on the VIP Cd, but I can say the live song is real good. The recording is really excellent and the vocals are really perfect, phlegm-clamped and throaty. Perverts as we have grown to love them, and with their distinguishing retro/groove vibe in their grinding Death, DEAD still leave one of their nostalgic posthumous opus upon us. It’s great that Francisco decided to release this 7’ because this band still means much to me, it was REALLY sick.

    1 - Phalluscult

The cover might be not one of the best ever, it just depicts a man with a huge cock but the drawing quality is really horrible, but the interior shows one of the most extreme scenes of female crucifix masturbation I have seen, it’s damn eye-popping… I want to know the chcik who did this eheh… musically UNGOD are very anti-melodical Blackish Death Metal, never exceedingly fast but really moody. The vocals are not exactly shrieky but are really screamed out of a slit throat, it sounds as if the singer was dying while recording them. The guitarwirk is essential, acid, absolutely devoid of melody or compassion, I like the fact it is damnn difficult to swallow, just like some older Black Metal a la APATOR or HADEZ, but without use of samplings and solos to complete it up. It’s raw, and basic, and hateful, and ugly, it won’t spin your head but it is definitely a kick in the guts.
