  • DISCIPLES OF MOCKERY (USA/Ny): “s/t” split Cd with WOMB (USA/Ny) 2002 Necroharmonic

    RECENSORE: Unknown

    VOTO: 9,20/10

    DURATA:

    Tracklist

    6) Rotting Immaculate Like You 7) Sustained in Desolation 8) God of Love

DISCIPLES OF MOCKERY opens with a fast song that has a clear Black Metal structure, yet it develops gradually into good Death/Doom that strongly smells of genuine fundamental old school like WINTER or DISEMBOWELMENT in the more relentless, doomy parts or IMPRECATION when the business gets tough. In any case, with D.O.M. you get classic, pristine Death Metal of the finest sort. Both bands have masterpiece material in one single disc I really see no reason good enough for not buying an album like this. Superlative.
  • WOMB (USA/Ny): “s/t” split Cd with DISCIPLES OF MOCKERY (US/Ny) 2002 Necroharmonic

    VOTO: 9,00/10

    DURATA:

    Tracklist

    1) Bound, Fucked, Humiliated 2) Thong 3) Secrete 4) Borne 5) Outro

To be precise this is not a real split, as DISCIPLES OF MOCKERY is consists of the same members as WOMB, plus a guitarist. This Cd contains the two demos from these bands that contains all the INCANTATION line up from the “Onward to Golgotha” days, minus John.

WOMB has no guitars, just bass (two basses to be precise) and the classic deep vocals “a la Craig Pillard”. If you read some INCANTATION interviews in the past you might know that Craig basically left the band, among other reasons, because he was particularly into the Doom aspect of INCANTATION, while John wanted a balanced mix between fast and slow. So no surprise WOMB is all about that: impossibly heavy and bass saturated Doom, with all the majestic, satanic intensity of the best INCANTATION. I personally found the slower parts of INCANTATION terribly charming, and to hear an album that evolves around those sonorities is really spine chilling. I think the third track “Secrete” represents the band in its whole concept. Craig unveils his frightening vocals dragging slowly through each minute like a dead thing. Being two basses and no guitar, you can imagine how distorted and claustrophobic it becomes after a few minutes. Consider the song are an average of 5 each, and you get the complete picture.
  • MALIGNANCY (USA/Ny): “Frailty of the Human Condition“ split Cd with INTERVALLE BIZARRE (Cze) 2002 Shindy

    RECENSORE: Unknown

    VOTO: 8,50/10

    DURATA:

    Tracklist

    6) Fibroid Embolism 7) Profitable Extinction 8) Rotten Seed 9) Post Fetal Depression 10) Mortality Weakness

I would dare to categorize MALIGNANCY as a Death Grind metal band as well even though in a very different way that INTERVALLE BIZARRE. The band follows definitely straighter patterns, really ultra-heavy, with a shitload of grinding bursts and “as guttural as possible” vocals. I haven’t found any boring mid tempo riffs at all, just a compact, real neat selection of hammering Death Metal brutality, containing a balance of fast bursts (that never get blurred by speed) and crunchy monstrosities a la SKINLESS. Regarding those that introduce the band as MORTICIAN-sounding I wonder why they are allowed to write on a music mag, there is really no real point of contact beteen the two bands that’s not the vocals, and then maybe. The guitarwork I am hearing contains a dozen more riffs per song than our beloved MORTY, and bases much of its heaviness on contrastic, complex turns rather than one-note chunks. Even not as immediatly stunning as INTERVALLE BIZARRE, MALIGNANCY are a force to be reckoned, ton heavy and immensely powerful, if I am in for some skullcrushing Death Metal this is in first line.

    1) Abortion By Muriatic Acid 2) Disfigured Sculpture 3) Raped Serenity 4) Incomprehensible Movements 5) Walking Corpse (Brutal Truth cover)

INTERVALLE BIZARRE: All my whining about modern, technical, Brutal Death’s lack of incisive effects fall to pieces when I hear Cds like this. INTERVALLE BIZARRE are the most superb, original band playing this kind of super clean new brand of Deathgrind of all the fucking Eastern bloc. This split recreates today in pure fucking force what SQUASH BOWELS managed with their previous “Trnybal”. Dissonant, constantly changing, with a shitload of those schizo guitar twists that was DYING FETUS’ earlier distinctive remark. INTERVALLE BIZARRE is undoubtedly heavier, and crazier then any of the new school DM bands put together and mixes all the furious rage of grind with the best elements of Death Metal, super producted and so technical to give you vertigos. I once described BASTARD SAINTS as the grindcore cousins of DYING FETUS, now I have its rightful twin at the Cd player, I can’t imagine a better split between our BASTARDs and this band. When you can bend all this energy and savagery into such a refined, clear product you definitely achieved something. BRUTAL TRUTH cover at the end.
  • VOMIT REMNANTS (Jap): “Indefensible Vehemence” Cd 2000 Supreme

    RECENSORE: Unknown

    VOTO: 6,50/10

    Tracklist

    1) Intro 2) Prodigy Of Solitude 3) 00 Buck Shot 4) Inherited Deformity 5) Embludgeonment (Regard To Devourment) 6) A Puppet Mill

When I thought I heard the worst clicky drum sound in KRISIUN’s “Ageless Venomous” I manage to get something so fucking synthetical that makes the Chemical Brothers sound Bluesy. There is no way to get rid of this stupid typewriter crepitating beneath the music, I am afraid, but it’s really too obnoxious to concentrate on anything else. Trying to isolate the rest of the disc from this broken bicycle sound, however, here you get some competent mega-slamming Death Metal, with mega-stopped riffs and gurgly vocals. The story goes the same as for the other hundred thousands American bands that play this kind of music, if you actually like this cold, precise version of DM VOMIT REMNANTS might be the excellent christmas present, especially considering the turn on that they’re Japanese as well.

With bands like DYING FETUS or DISGORGE (Ca) VOMIT REMNANTS won’t probably even get shaded, the riffs are perfect, the vocals perfect, and the layout is rather good, too. Yet the problem might reside in the same word: “perfection”. Do you need “perfection” in a music that was born to represent uncontrollable bursts of rage and lust for guts?

Superb digital Death Metal that sound like a polished version of DISGORGE. Primal vs. sophisticated, chose your side.
PS: vote is given if you exclude the drums, otherwise 3…
  • BLEEDING MORGUE (Ita): “s/t” Cdr 2002 s/p [demo]

    RECENSORE: Unknown

    VOTO: 5,00/10

Let’s screw the production for once, The vocals are a bit too high and the guitars almost non-existent but that’s a demo so fuck it, it’s the second time they remix it and I won’t wait for a third copy.

At first what I didn’t like at all about the band was given by my impression that they were trying to sound American and technical like INTERNAL BLEEDING (first stuff) or the other polished, slamming DM bands that followed their particular style, especially in the States. They seemed to be struggling but didn’t manage to reach the right solidity in songwriting or the necessary speed of say, bands like GORGASM or DEEDS OF FLESH, I mean. After the last complete listen, however I begun to get into the slower parts and especially the first two tracks which appear more cadenced, sick, and bloody, and combined with the filthy production they even give reminiscence of some obscure southamerican forgotten demo. I guess I caught at least two parts where the vocals are a xerox of Chris Barnes’ “I Cum Blood” but that’s not a terrible lack, I guess. Things get worse with the third and fifth tracks that spot at least two attempt at “blasting” which just won’t convince a crippled crone. Tsk tsk. I think they’re still an hybrid between the real Sick Death Metal band and a mockery of some American big name. If they can get rid of the slams, the solos and the “chugga chugga” NYDM macho riffs they might as well be an interesting band to follow. Brilliant the catarrous backing vocals that follow strictly the roars all thru the Cdr. Follow the filth, follow the dirt.
  • SQUASH BOWELS (Pol): “The Mass Rotting, The Mass Sickening” Cd 2001 Obscene

    RECENSORE: Unknown

    VOTO: 6,40/10

Well. After releasing what I could undoubtedly baptize as the best and heaviest goregrind album of the last year (and maybe further back), my expectations for this Cd were high, very high. I admit that in this case they haven’t been totally fulfilled. There was something in “Trnybal” that definitely filled the sound all around the stereo with solid lead, all around for 360 fucking degrees, making it completely saturated yet not sounding distorted in the “garage grind” way, a masteriece that balanced total heaviness, groove, experimentation and all this still benefitting by a real perfect sound that usually appeal only to Death Metal. Might be the 2/3 line up restyling, but I really find this new album a score more predictable. I can’t but keep on doing paragons with their last work, but if I were able to switch off my memory for a second, I think I would dare to say that this is still an extremely good release, much less in the total “goregrind maelstrom” of filth and impossibly harmonized vocals of other goregrind monsters, just much more structured and “metallic”, let’s say Deathgore if we need a label. The base vocals are still heavy effect stomach-deep roars but this time they’re paired with another row of more human yet still low ones that do the main job of singing the lyrics, the larvae ones are however used more or less like an instrument that sometimes gets out of the lines with meaningless boiling noises, which is ok becouse the rest of the disc sorely needs some savage fury to dismantle some order. To hear SQUASH BOWELS so “just OK” is a real stab, that doesn’t mean they’re not still heavier than any MALIGNANT TUMOUR or PURULENT SPERMCANAL by a shot, however. Can’t add more words.
