Bones Brigade rarely takes a false move when it comes to goregrind or grindcore. SCD can be possibly be considered the fastest, heaviest goregrind band ever from France. They have the particularity, just like OBITUARY ten plus years ago, to avoid completely the lyrics, although our dear camembert eaters have gone one step further, they have no song titles either (I guess they will have codes or numbers at least for the stage)… Cover artwork and packaging are really deluxe, ultra splatter yet artistically quite delicate and balanced. The nice case however holds a contorted, elaborated goregrind with a solid structure, neat sounds and super fast grindblasts as well as the typical vocal hysteria that grab your brain with constant twists of grunts and screams. Songs average about one minute each and there are 21 in the Cd, that makes barely much more than half an hour of full throttle grind with not a second of rest to catch breath. Sound quality and drum precision are really impeccable, could be easily some computer trick to make this shit so perfect. If however the sound was not so crisp everything could be easily reduced to a mass of formless sound. Vocals are so guttural at times you might get the idea there’s a duck with a pitch shifter on the mic. It might be my impression but it even gets heavier and heavier with each song, it ends up being almost pure noise. Do I need to go on?
  • NECROTORTURE (Ita): “Exploring Ways of Flesh” Cdr 2002 s/p [demo]

    RECENSORE: Unknown

    VOTO: 6,90/10

    DURATA:

    Tracklist

    1) Exploring Ways of Flesh 2) Mortal Machine 3) Psychotic Necrophilus 4) Pleasure of the Moribund

You can accuse me of many foul deeds but you can’t tell me I am not honest when reviewing albums. I was a bit puzzled when I was told this is supposed to actually be NECROTORTURE’s second demo, but then taking a quick look at the bio I got it. Me smart ass. The band was previously called SUSPIRIA , and I bet I wouldn’t have recognized them if I didn’t read it with my eyes. While SUPIRIA’s demo had the two main faults of being fuzzy and somewhat “soporific” on the long run (that is, 3 minutes), this new demo on Cdr is a fucking slash straight in the guts. By rubbing away all the monotony and various arrangement gaps of the previous band, and by pumping up volume and density by a score, the strugging NECROTORTURE accomplished the deed of creating a downright, solid, blooming chunk of Brutal Death Metal. No gracious abbellishments here. Riffs are straight, squat and hammering just like the vocals. They pound over and over with short, to the point grunts which have a complete lack of expressivity, humanity and melody. I kinda like it when singers don’t follow the music or alterate the vocals to make it more “metal” or “easy”. This is some kind of Brutal Death shit that is cold and punding as fuck, roughly reminishent of DYING FETUS’ slower arrangements or I’d dare to throw in DEVOURMENT or REGURGITATION for comparisons. If you didn’t get it yet, their style is mainly American in direction. The tracks “Psychotic Necrophilius” and “Mortal Machine” also appeared in the SUSPIRIA one (well, they CONSISTED in the SUSPIRIA demo in effect), although they sound a bit different now. No need to say a little bit better. I still have a problem with the overall sound but hey, this is a fucking demo so it’s the structures that count, not the production, even tho this is some kind of music that gains a lot from a brilliant recording. It’s just 4 tracks but they cut your breath in pieces. Heavy stuff.
  • ANAL TORTURE (Bel): “Shit Pifter” Cd 2000 Nocturnal

    RECENSORE: Unknown

    VOTO: 8,00/10

    Tracklist

    1) Genital/Anal Grinder 2) More Evil than YOU Can handle 3) Intro 4) ...And Rockstar Wept 5) Sad testicle 6) Intro 7) Necrodildo 69) 8) Intro 9) Straight Outta Boerecote 10) Intro 11) The Texas Dildo Masquerade 12) Pisskas

There is one thing that really doens’t convince me 100% in this recording and that’s the vocals. I mean, not always, just when they get hysterical, they sound more like those new school hard core bands of a few years ago, the ones that liked to weep on stage (like TIMEBOMB or SPAWN). Other than that the songs themselves are rather compact, the guitar sound is fucking great and hugely distorted, the grind parts totally manic and contain a good amount crusty groove. Every song stops abruptly as if the tracks were wrongly cut in studio, which adds to the genrally insane feeling of the album. ANAL TORTURE plays Death Grind, or better yet some sort of schizoid grindcore with Death Metal sounds and vocals which is rather cool. Gets a bit repetitive with time despite the seemingly random arrangements, but I don’t think it’s a huge gap. More or less the Cd is just a burst of humourism and madness, with songs like Straight Outta Borecote (sounds like a BLOOD DUSTER album), The Texas Dildo Masquerade (guess a movie with a similarly sounding name) or the deranged Pisskas.

The Cd opens with a plagiarism of CARCASS’ “Genital Grinder” but I consider it as a tribute (like GRUESOME STUFF RELISH’s) even if it gets different after a few seconds. This Cd is supposed to contain the debut stuff from the band so for an intro it’s more than simply Ok. Ah great packaging, great packaging.

Last Note: Before putting the Cd aside I noticed the intro is called Genital/Anal grinder, eheh, once again I won.

  • NEURO-VISCERAL EXHUMATION (Bra): “Bathed in hecatombic Concoctions” split Cd with LYMPHATIC PHLEGM (Bra) 2000 Fleshfeast/Disgorgement of Squash Bodies

If LYMPHATIC PHLEGM’s design was terrificly handed by Black Hole’s mainman, guess what Sascha of CBT could do with this side and his Grindesign agency. No need to say this packing is hair rising. An elegant collage of splatter pathological mountains of gore. Yeah! Musically NVE is less subtle than the other band in the split. Constantly grinding, with a ultra low sound and REAL drums, it is way more human yet an inch more brutal and to the point. The vocals are not constantly grunting but they tend to move a bit sometimes assuming the throat-clearing tone which was typical, for instance, of GUT (there is a GUT cover in this side, and one by DEAD INFECTION too). Guitars are still ultra-distorted and tend to crackle a bit when they reach the lower scales, I think I love this shit, especially the grinding bursts when everything gets crazy. A wall of sound worth of the best MORTICIAN or LDOH. No weak spots that I can tell, really solid shit.

LYMPHATIC PHLEGM: LYMPHATIC’s unique approach to goregrind really made them special and creates a feeling of oppression and hopelessness which is only reached, in my opinion, by the best CUM, LAST DAYS OF HUMANITY or earlier SQUASH BOWELS. No need to add this is my favorite brazilian act (goregrind-wise at least.) Still using huge doses of pitch shifting to make the vocals a sordid pudding of screams and inhuman grunts, and a hammering drum machine that kicks the spine, yet the best and more distinguishing thing in this band is their apocalyptic, distant and eerie feeling. The riffs adopted are sometimes similar to some rather simple song for kids, yet as disturbing when collocated in such a scenario of limbless torsos and pathological abberrations. All the intros from the seongs are actually samples from the movie Deranged. Fernando of the great magazine Black Hole took care of the superb design.
  • MACHETAZO (Spa): “Trono de Huesos” Cd 2002 Razorback

    RECENSORE: Unknown

    VOTO: 8,80/10

    DURATA:

Well MACHETAZO dear shorthairs, the first time I saw them on the “Carne de Cementerio” debpresentation to the civilized world, I thought they were some baggy pant grindcore band that erroneously fell into the Horror Death Metal pit just to experiment with a light heart and not much seriousness. How fucking wrong were my preconcepts towards the bald grinders!! The harts of these bastards is more rotting and more putrid than any fucking evil-looking brute. If you had the chance to hear the prevous Cd, consider it as a trippy, experimental intro to the full force follow up that is “Throno de Huesos”, the Throne of Bones. This new album does not follow up exactly where the last ended, it leaves all the past polishing and the GUT/AUTOPSY sludgy spirals behind in favor of a full force blast of fucking grindcore that enervates your skull and shit in your eyesockets, filthy, almost crusty and with tons of sheer speed, the new MACHETAZO shows a fresh, charged grindcore band that has all the feel and energy of old classics, I was to the point of thinking about MOTORHEAD as an extreme comparison when I heard the cover at the end of the Cd and that was “Ace of Spades” ah ah. Sybil Necrogoregrinder thou hast to call me forthwith on. I might be nuts but this album reminds me much of EXHUMED’s speed metal groove, BRUTAL TRUTH, BIRDFLESH and ENT’s speed core simpicity and catchiness, yet some inches more into the plgue of sheer grind confusion. MACHETAZO’s outrages of groovy noise are enough to fill ears and to have a bull headbang with raised fists. The singer catches breat to spew vocals as fast as fucking possible to follow up the musicwork. Raging, roily, turbulent and savage death grind sucked in a short circuitry of frenzied notes and death metal obscurity. Thanks Razorback I owe you one more.

Being a great fan of golden age comic books, uncle Creepy horror tales, and genuine old fashioned death/grind, IMP… ehm… GHOUL couln’t have hit me in a sappier spot. I had ardently anticipated the coming of this full length and now that I got it I can seriously say I am adoring it from every perspective. Starting from a bright four color cover and packaging that spots all the clichès of cheap horror from the fifties, including bloody axe, gutted corpse and CRAMPS logo-style font, this Cd owes its magick to a strong identity of super splatter humour. On the musical side GHOUL play some messy, noisy and grimy ilk of Death Metal with thier monocles pointed straight in the past. The savagery of their music, the gore gore lyrics and this full rounded metal groove can’t but remind in a first moment of almighty EXHUMED of “In The Name of Gore”. Oh and IMPALED too. I don’t think GHOUL are being too subtle (nor caring to be) in declaring their CARCASS-worship, so fucking evident it is in the rot’n’roll heavy mosh intermezzos that permeate the non-fully-grinding moments. The vocal set just bring Jeff Walker to mind, and the deep Bill Steer-like subvocals just contribute to the picture. CARCASS worhipping it is, without any doubts, yet we’re not talking about the nauseatingly sweet metal solos, or the stylistical godly evolutions of our beloved’s first 3 (and only) albums, I mean, this is not CLONING like GENERAL SURGERY, DISENTERY, PATHOLOGIST or earlier XYSMA. I tend to consider CARCASS as a monolith of inspiration, a totally new approach to music that hit the market with something never heard until then, innovators like AUTOPSY, BLACK SABBATH or Elvis Preasley. You can xerox them blatantly, or you can just be influenced by their festering emanations. Those were the lysergic fumes that brought ABHOT, NECROPSY, NECRONY, TRAUMATIC etc out of the Scandinavian Death Metal soup and gave em the gift of grind. So that’s where bands like GHOUL are spawned, out of a new wave of CARCASS worshipping death grind that’s taking foot in a small California area of late. But of course GHOUL is European. Eh. Uh. Rewind. I was talking about their music. Well that’s much more than the vocals and the SUPERB crushing guitar sound (the best guitar sound I have heard in years) on the album. Huge doses of mosh, one forgettable cover of the gay band MEGADETH (gay today right as they were gay in ‘85), cheezy humorous lyrics full of gore extravaganza (read the way Chilly and Goreardy tricked the band into a contract, dammit, there’s one entire song that talks about that “Soon They’ll Scream” eh eh), this music is so fucking digestible you can spin this disc for hours, it’s addictive.
